Following these last couple lessons we will move on to Social Studies which will focus on NC history. We will start Unit 3 this week, students move from considering what has inspired the poets they have been reading about to write poetry, to thinking about what inspires them to write poetry. For the performance task, students participate in a poetry presentation in which they read aloud an original poem and then explain to the audience with the use of visuals and evidence from the poem why they were inspired to write their poem. We will also practice fluency practices during the ALL Block Component. Math: We will begin exploring place value. ELA- This week students will analyze a model essay and use what they learn to write their own essay. We started the essay last week and will continue with proof paragraph 2 and the conclusion. Then students will have the opportunity to revise with each other.
When writing an essay they will have to include the following: 1-introduction of a topic clearly that groups related information in a paragraph 2-develop the topic with facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations and examples related to the topic 3-Link ideas using words and phrases (e.g. another, for example, also, because) 4- Use precise language and vocabulary to inform about or explain about the topic 5-Provide a concluding statement or section related to the information Math- We are continuing the Area and Perimeter unit using what we've learned about factors and multiples. Students are exploring these concepts by creating a blueprint of a zoo with specific builder requirements. The have to justify the factors that they choose for their enclosures depending upon the animal and its size. Science- we are wrapping up nutrition and getting into photosynthesis. Friday we placed mint in water and positioned one plant in a closed cabinet and the other on a windowsill. Students will make observations throughout the week as they explore the need for sun(energy). Be on the look out later this week for Quarter 1 conference Sign-up Genius. ELA- Students will be using evidence from poems to describe poet's inspiration. Later in the week, they will analyze a model essay and use what they learn to write their own essay. They will also be assessed on factors and multiples. As a class we participated in a review for this upcoming assessment on Friday. Students will begin solving problems with area and perimeter. The will find areas of rectangular figures with known side lengths. Also problems involving a fixed area and varying perimeters with a fixed perimeter and varying areas. They will be assessed at the end of the week. I sent home an assessment Friday that students completed for the data/graph unit. If retake is written on the assessment, students were offered another opportunity with a multiple choice assessment. Science Continuing nutrition unit focusing on key vocabulary: nutrient, vitamins, energy, organism Interims will go home this Friday. I will send out a Sign-up Genius for conferences soon, conferences will begin on the week of the 15th. Hello Parents here are some updates for this coming week. ELA: We have started Unit to in our poetry Module. n Unit 2, students continue thinking about what inspires writers to write poetry. They think about what inspired the main character, Jack, to write and they collect evidence from his poetry supporting their thinking. This week they will be introduced to informative writing and write an informative paragraph for the mid-unit assessment about what inspires Jack. Math: We will finish our unit on multiplicative comparisons (times as many) and begin the area and perimeter unit. Last week I started giving a multiplication timed quiz to assess student's mastery of facts. When finished, I will send the information home to you. It is imperative for students to know their facts in fourth grade. If they have not reached the current goal I will ask them to practice at home for homework. We will also continuously practice in class as well. Each student has an account on Reflex, which is an excellent resource for remembering facts. This site can be accessed at home and school. More information will come if it pertains to your child. Science: We will continue our nutrition, food, minerals and exercise unit. Focusing on the benefits of vitamins, minerals and exercise. We will also classify food or non-food items based on their ability to provide energy and materials for survival. Important Dates: Open House: Thursday 9/27/18 |
